Land and Language
Throughout history languages of the ancestors have been discovered in the earth like veins of silver and gold, cultural and scientific treasures from which we learn of our own beginnings. The planet, we can call her Gaia or Mother Earth, holds these mysteries as if in her memory, and over time humans have discovered the land as a great library of human culture and communication.
The phenomenon of language fascinates me, and as I am led by paint, materials, and color, to create sensuous terrains of canvas, feral markings often pass through me. I recognize the impulse to mark that rises in me in those moments, and know that it must be the same impulsive drive that drew out the creativity of our earliest ancestors.
To some extent, my paintings are an artist’s way of saying grace: giving thanks for the creative gifts within all of us, and thanks to the planet for storing and guarding our secrets.
